THREE QUESTIONS WITH LESLEY-ANN
Where is the most exotic destination you have been to?
“São Tomé and Príncipe are two tiny islands in the Atlantic, around 140 miles off the west coast of Africa in the Gulf of Guinea. Very few people know about them and there’s something quite exciting about travelling to a place a little off the radar. With tourism in its infancy, you get to enjoy the slow, unrushed pace of life, pristine beaches and jaw dropping scenery pretty much on your own.”
Which is your best-loved national park?
“Mahale Mountains National Park in western Tanzania. It’s remote and the journey to get there is definitely an adventure. But it’s probably the best place in the world to see and experience wild chimpanzees up close in their natural habitat. I did daily hikes into the mountains to spend an hour with the M Group, a community of more than 75 chimps that have got used to short spells of human contact and so are un-phased by you watching them. This was definitely a dream come true for me.”
Which places have you visited that have exceeded your expectations?
“In terms of a country, it has to be Bhutan. You read so much about how it is untouched by tourism and it’s all true. I felt totally privileged to experience its remote isolation, where I got access to a traditional way of life not many people get to see and where I travelled trekked through pristine landscapes. As for a hotel, that’s the Datai in Langkawi. Everyone tells you how amazing it is (location, interiors, service) and it’s definitely a hotel that lives up to the hype and more.”
“I love to push the boundaries with clients giving them ideas that they haven’t even thought about, often taking them out of their comfort zone to help them experience places a little differently. This is something I can do as I know I have the support of amazing trusted partners around the world, who I’ve built excellent relationships with.”
